Heat exchangers used in aircraft engines:

Heat exchangers used in aircraft engines:

Type of Heat Exchanger

Function

Example/Application

Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger

Transfers heat from hot compressed air to cooler ambient air.

Pre-cooler in jet engines, ECS cooling systems.

Air-to-Liquid Heat Exchanger

Transfers heat from a hot liquid (e.g., engine oil) to cooler air.

Oil coolers in gas turbine engines.

Liquid-to-Liquid Heat Exchanger

Transfers heat between two liquid fluids.

Fuel-Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE) for fuel preheating and oil cooling.

Recuperators (Regenerative HX)

Captures waste heat from exhaust gases to improve efficiency.

Used in Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) and experimental engines.

Intercoolers

Cools compressed air between stages in a multi-stage compressor.

Found in turbocharged aircraft engines.

Radiators (Piston Engines)

Uses airflow to cool liquid coolant in piston engines.

Found in liquid-cooled aircraft piston engines.
